Lionel Messi, the 2010 Ballon d’Or winner, hit a hat-trick in Barca’s 5-0 Copa del Rey win over Real Betis.

Lionel Messi celebrated his coronation as the world’s greatest player with a hat-trick for Barcelona in a 5-0 victory over second division Real Betis in their Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg. The Argentine won the 2010 Fifa Ballon d’Or on Monday, ensuring he retained title of the best footballer on the planet after securing the honour in 2009. Messi duly demonstrated why he is considered a cut above the rest with a trademark display as Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona earned a comfortable first-leg lead. Lionel Messi celebrated a second successive World Player of the Year award with a hat-trick as Barcelona thrashed second division Real Betis 5-0 in a Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg.

Messi paraded the FIFA Ballon d’Or trophy on the pitch at the Nou Camp before kick-off, flanked by team mates Andres Iniesta and Xavi who came in second and third respectively, and then took apart a valiant Betis. The Argentine scored the first just before half-time, dinking the ball over the goalkeeper from an Iniesta pass, showed persistence to score the second in the 62nd, and claimed his hat-trick with a breakaway goal 11 minutes later.

He was given a standing ovation when he was substituted near the end, with the whole stadium chanting his name. “This game will end much of the debate (about the Ballon d’Or). It is in good hands,” Barca defender Dani Alves told Spanish television. “Messi is the best and he proves it every day. The other two deserved it as well, but it’s clear he is different to the rest.” Alves went on to praise the visitors who hit the crossbar at the end of the first half, when an adventurous game plan caused Barca a lot of problems until Messi’s goals and tired legs took their toll. ||

  1. You can't say "He answered" showing a single game that was played after the cerimony. In my opinion you should have show the reason why the ballon d'or that year wasn't undeserved showing what Messi has done during 2010.

  2. I'm in a streak of watching Messi goals and suddenly I realised how good is Iniesta. Like really. Watch him whenever he has the ball.

  3. 2010: He wins Ballon D'Or despite not winning CL. He presents the trophy, then silences the critics by scoring a hat-trick.
2019: He wins Ballon D'Or despite not winning CL. He presents the trophy, then silences the critics by scoring a hat-trick.

  4. Back in 1986, I got into football as a kid watching the brilliance of Diego Maradona. When he retired, I completely lost interest in football, and this lasted about a decade and a half. Then Messi came along. The moment I saw his brilliance (totally by chance, I was not even a Barcelona supporter before), I knew I had to start watching football again! I can't imagine watching any matches once he hangs up his boots. He's just as brilliant as Maradona, but a better goal scorer and therefore the best ever. The G.O.A.T.

  5. Make a video of Messi SHITTING AND U GUYS EATING IT. stupid fanboys, he won another free ballon d or in 2019 again. now, start eating his SHIT and make a video of it

  6. It's not his fault. I'm telling you he would trade all those best players for a world cup. I think that the Ballon D'or got this intense because of these of him and CR7. Nobody can really tell me if an african player ever won it, the only thing new kids know is Messi and CR7. I'm of the ones that think the world cup is the best and will always be what you need to win to become legendary.

  7. 13 seasons..Articulate goals, articulate passes, articulate dribble, Articulate free kicks, Tackled, beaten, bruised, crticized, 13 seasons in a row and still GOING!! who else lasts that long?????
